A letter from the army

My 16-year-old son was thrilled to get his first invitation to apply to an army unit, based on his grades in the Open University (many high school students study there). The invitation was passed on to us through the university, which explained in the accompanying letter that they cooperate with the army to identify students who might be suitable for a particular unit. The university doesn’t give out identifying details about the students and the army will only learn his name when my son sends in the application. The application is pretty nosy and even asks for phone numbers of friends who might be suitable. If he is accepted and joins this unit, he would need to commit to a year and a half of “tzva keva” or standing army service after graduating from university. He can’t wait to fill out the application and send it in.

Unfortunately we’ve never heard of this unit and don’t have a clue about what it does.

With the political and military situation the way it is we will be quite happy if he is able to complete his army service by sitting in university and working on a computer. The army will probably be better off too.
