People need to be aware that pedophiles and molesters can be anyone- including charedim, They can be charming and friendly and are expert liars and manipulators. Most perpetrators are known to their victims, which means the perpetrator could be a family member, teacher, neighbor,babysitter, tutor, sports teacher etc. Does it mean we should be suspicious of everyone? Maybe?. The only thing we can say about the parents of the children of Nachlaot is that they were naive and trusting not that they were negligent. What can we learn from this? Talk to your children, teach them they can say NO to any touch that is uncomfortable. Teach them that there is no such thing as a SECRET from a parent. As parents we must learn to trust our instincts , and really listen to our children- if we think there is something going on - there probably is. I recommend that anyone who would like to learn more should come to the conference on Sunday night January 22 at the Ramada Hotel sponsored by Kav L'Noar. Besides hearing from Rav Leff and Dr. David Pelcovitz you will also hear a conversation with a parent whose children were molested in Nachlaot. Related organizations will have tables in the lobby and each participant will receive a resource booklet with articles, and other information. Kav L'Noar is also planning post conference workshops in selected neighborhoods. You really can't do it by a conversation that is reported secondhand and then translated(which you are trying to do) and even most parents aren't able in real time. Nor are their fears(even legitimate) always aimed the perpetrator, especially for exceptionally young children. There is in fact a well documented case of a child being repeatedly abused by her mother, who would tell her, "this is what your father is going to do to you, because this is what men do to little girls" who retained a seemingly loving relationship with her mother(her abuser) while developing grave fears toward all of her male relatives, especially her father who eventually discovered and removed his daughter from the abuse. Nor does it have anything to do with Jewish or non-Jewish. My father gave me similar talks(btw "berating" is something you are reading into the text) about not judging people(any people Jew or non-Jew) on how other people speak about them, or necessarily how they appear. As Jews there is an obligation to take care of our less fortunate members, which means as well not teasing them, there is also a chiyuv to dan l'kaf zecut, which I have heard Rav Birnbaum Z"L say applies equally to Jews and non-Jews(that's about as Chareidi as it gets). Furthermore many of the perpetrators were not Chareidi. The leader of the ring himself wore a baseball cap instead of kippa and from what I have ever seen of him didn't wear tzitzit, at least not on the outside, and walks around in athletic clothes... not your image of the " anyone with a beard or payess, is automatically good, decent and safe, part of the klal." He doesn't look anything Chareidi. Nor were all of the victims Chareidi, Daati Leumi, and Secular(just about any child too young to reliably testify) that they could lay their hands on were targeted.
