Q: How was the haredi public mekupach (shortchanged)? A: Because Superpharm, the drugstore chain, included only regular dairy infant formula in its giveaway for new parents. Haredi parents require mehadrin formula, produced under a higher level of kashrut supervision. Readers reported this "injustice" to the newspaper Hashavua, which contacted the formula manufacturer. In response the company offered to send a coupon for a free 900-gram package of mehadrin formula to anyone who left a name and address with the customer service office. Agel Pyramid Scheme Exposed

Jameel at the Muqata writes about the multi-level "pyramid" scheme used to market Agel, an overpriced and unproven vitamin supplement. The highest-level marketers have made a lot of money, but hundreds at the bottom will lose their investment unless they can convince enough others to invest and market as well. Most large "Anglo" communities in Israel have several Agel representatives.  (Agel hasn't discovered mine yet. Please stay away.) Breastfeeding Expert Dr. Jack Newman on Marketing, Heroin and More

Yesterday I went to hear Dr. Jack Newman at the La Leche League Conference for Breastfeeding Professionals at Tel Hashomer hospital. I have summarized some of the more interesting points below. In the context of discussing the International WHO Code of Marketing Breastmilk Substitutes (Israel is a signatory), he described the attitudes that formula companies try to foster through their marketing.
