Purim is coming soon! Here are links for the holiday and more. I posted about Israeli Baby Names at the Nameberry blog. Our Shiputzim translates the Megillah into Heblish. Jacob Richman has a wonderful collection of videos and websites for Purim. Kveller reports on a shortage of Israeli "chalav yisrael" formula in the US, because of an outbreak of disease among Israeli dairies. The problem hasn't been widely reported here. Local Principal Takes Stand on Cheating

We often hear stories about condoning cheating in Israeli schools, and in the religious sector as well. One a retired teacher told me she didn't see anything wrong with it. She cheated as a student, and her children did, too. Image by Mr_Stein via Flickr So I found it refreshing when my daughter's high school principal canceled this year's hachtarah,   after senior girls texted answers to friends during an important exam. In Israeli religious schools the hachtarah rates somewhere between an American senior prom and homecoming. But instead of crowning a queen, they crown the Rabbanit Purim (rebbetzin, or rabbi's wife). Purim Costume Brainstorming

For an updated list for 2010, see Easy Costume Ideas. Reiza, who is pregnant and due right around Purim, tweeted that she hasn't thought about Purim costumes yet for her three kids. I always find it hard to come up with easy, inexpensive costumes. After Purim, of course, I have dozens of ideas. Reiza wrote, "Costumes should be eco-friendly (aka cheap)."
