On my way to my daughter’s elementary school to pick up schoolbooks for next year, I spotted this flyer. It seemed fresh, although the event was scheduled for several weeks ago.
Here is a translation:
On Tuesday, July 8, 2014, Rabbi Mordechai Elon will give a talk and G-d-willing merit all of us, men, women and children, to participate in the completion of inscribing the final letters of a Torah scroll that the family wrote in memory of their parents.
Thank G-d for the merit that was granted to us to be the conduits for this mitzva.
- 7:00 PM: Workshop on inscription for children “letters of love.”
- 8:00 PM: Evening prayer and music
- 9:00 PM: Lesson by R. Mordechai Elon, shlit”a
The evening will take place in the presence of the [Petach Tikva chief] rabbi Micha Halevi shlit”a
Our Teacher and Rabbi Hayim Druckman shlit”a

How can it be that an employee of the Israel rabbinate, Petach Tikva’s chief rabbi Micha Halevi, participated in an event that violates the law? Mordechai Elon is a convicted sex offender and prohibited from contact with minors. This event was clearly intended for children.
Rabbi Druckman, head of Bnei Akiva yeshivot (religious academies including high schools) in Israel, notoriously continued to employ Elon as a teacher at his yeshiva for several months. Then Elon’s lessons ceased suddenly with no announcement or explanation.
